What do I need to breastfeed?

The great thing about breastfeeding is that's so convenient you don't actually need anything to get on with it! Many first time mums-to-be want to try breastfeeding but worry about how they will know what to do and if they'll be able to do it. Sometimes it can be useful to be prepared by having a few simple items ready in the house for when you're home with your baby:

  • Nipple cream - in particular Lansinoh
  • Breastpads - disposable or washable pads (we love Little Lambs soft bamboo pads)
  • Nursing bras - at least a couple
  • Cushions or a breastfeeding pillow
  • A chair with arms
  • Easy access tops for the daytime
  • Easy access nightie or pyjamas
  • Muslins
  • An app on your phone to note when your baby last fed (it's amazing how easy it is to forget in those first sleep deprived days)

Before you sit down to feed your baby, remember you might be in that position for a while so get comfortable, relax and make sure you have all you need within reach. We suggest:

  • A book or TV remote
  • A drink
  • A snack
  • Put the phone on silent and a note on the doorbell so your baby isn't disturbed if he falls asleep
  • Go to the loo beforehand!

For practical tips on breastfeeding we highly recommend reading The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League. Best to read before the baby arrives and while you actually have the time!
